Reeves County Golf Course
Reeves County Golf Course History

Reeves County Golf Course was constructed in 1949 by local residents.  It was nine holes and had sand greens and fairways.  In 1951 the Pecos Housing Authority took the golf course.  They planted grass and seeded the greens, with the greens being done first.  This took one to two years to complete.

In 1955 the course was closed as they put city water down the center of the fairways and around the greens with a sprinkler system.  The water from the wells was too harsh and the grass did not grow well.  This allowed for better grass conditions.

Around 1970 the course was given to the City of Pecos by the Housing Authority after Interstate 20 took out a lot of their housing.  The Housing Authority gave the city all the equipment and $100,000 to help them out.  The City then hired Bill Wilson.  He put in two more holes and worked until 1984 or 1985.  Around the late 1970s, Reeves County took the golf course and Rossi Castle took over as manager with his wife Louise.  They ran Reeves County Golf Course until 1998.

Peter Mora took over as Superintendent and Manager in 2001 and ran the operation with David Vejil for the County until March of 2009, when PGA Professional Jeff Gibson took over as Head Golf Professional.  Peter then became the Golf Course Superintendent only.

In 2007 Reeves County sold some of the golf course that borders I-20 and passed a Municipal Bond to make the course 18 holes.  This project should be completed by the summer of 2011.  Architect Morgan Spears has been retained to do design work, with construction and project development to be overseen by Peter Mora.

Over the years there have been many very good players at RCGC.  Bill Weaver was a former greenskeeper who hit the ball a long way.  Jerry Jenkins, George Miller, Bill Moss and Jim Bob McNeil all were excellent players.  Today, the Baca brothers are probably the players to beat at any local event.

Micky Wright visited Reeves County Golf Course in the 1960s.  She gave an exhibition and played nine holes.  Kathy Whitworth played here when she attended Odessa College.  She was from Monahan.  PGA Tour Professionals Blaine McAlister and Chad Campbell both played here while in high school at Ft. Stockton and Andrews.

We are looking forward to a new era at Pecos when the course is completed.  However, it is important to remember the past and the people who made it happen.
